Throughout our nation's history First Ladies have played an influential role in shaping societal attitudes and affecting many initiatives and policies. One of the most courageous among this group of extraordinary women was Betty Ford. As she is laid to rest let us remember how she used her voice and the power of her platform to share her personal challenges with diseases that were once only whispered about. She was a woman of courage our nation was advanced in immeasurable ways by her bravery and example.
The First Ladies Foundation supports and promotes the legacies of the First Ladies of the United States. We are cultivating a comprehensive non-partisan history on the impact these women have made on the lives of Americans and people around the world.
Forty-six women have served alongside our presidents and been role models for generations of young women and men. Through their advocacy, diplomacy and White House stewardship, the First Ladies have influenced and helped shape American politics, domestic policy, and global advocacy.
The Foundation’s President is Anita McBride, a White House adviser in three presidential administrations. Most recently, she served as Assistant to President George W. Bush and chief of staff to First Lady Laura Bush. She is currently Executive in Residence at American University's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies in the School of Public Affairs.
